Kathy's Spiritual Meanderings....

Have you ever been lost?  My guess is right away your thoughts went to losing your way while you were driving or walking - a physical dis-location, so to speak.  However, sometimes being lost can be about a feeling of no longer knowing where you "fit".  Perhaps a feeling of separation or isolation.  Perhaps a feeling of floating along on a boat and not seeing any land in sight - that you will be adrift forever.  And then, out of the blue, you get a phone call from someone who lets you know you are missed.  Or you have a

We have a dog who is a border-collie/lab cross.  She is incredibly energetic - and she is incredibly anxious.  One of the latest developments is that she tends to have panic attacks in the car.  We have had her for 4 years now, and she has done the road trip between Regina and Erickson (where my husband lives) many times.  However, she has decided that being in the car is a terribly frightening place to be.    The way her anxiety shows up is that she starts panting and shaking like a leaf - and the more she does that

I took a leap of faith this past week and hosted an Ash Wednesday service.  I have never done one before, but somehow it felt like the right thing to do this year.  There were 10 people who gathered with me - a lovely circle of community.  I had 3 readings from the Hebrew scriptures that all included ashes in an act of lament - one spoke of the ashes related to the deep pain that many individuals bear (pain of abuse, neglect, grief, alienation); one spoke of the ashes relating to the horrors that are committed in our world

This Sunday is traditionally named "Transfiguration Sunday".  It is based on the story of Jesus taking 3 disciples with him to the top of a mountain.  While they are there, Jesus is "transfigured" while he is praying - the appearance of his face changes and his clothes become a dazzling white.  The disciples are confused by the whole experience and when they come down off the mountain, they are silent and tell no one about what they have seen.  I have preached on this story many times, and often have spoken about the natural tendency of the disciples who wanted

I am sitting in a condo at Fairmont, B.C. today, looking out at the sun shining on the hills across the valley - beauty! This next Sunday, the worship committee arranged for Mark Pitman to lead in worship.  I noticed in the bulletin (posted on our website), that his reflection is entitled "New Beginnings".  I look forward to eventually listening to it on our podcast!  I am so very thankful to be on holidays this week.  The last few weeks have been a flurry of planning out events and organizing a schedule for myself for the next few months as

Jesus is speaking with his disciples and says: "John the Baptist comes, eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say he has demons; I come eating and drinking and you say I am a glutton and a drunkard..."  Perspective is a funny thing.  Two people can be in the exact same place at the exact same time, and yet in describing their experience you would think they had been on different planets (like when my siblings and I describe some of our childhood memories!!)  Part of the problem is that once we have formed an impression or

I have been part of the United Church of Canada for all of my life - was baptized, confirmed, part of youth groups and bible studies and parenting groups - and now I am a Minister in the church.  Clearly "the church" and I are pretty connected!  It does my heart good to know that there are others out there who are wanting to have more conversation about how they could be more deeply connected to the church.  We are about to have confirmation classes, and at this point I think we have about 7 youth, between the ages of

One of the pictures I have taped up on my desk is of my husband's Aunt Sis.  She was 99 years old when she died - and she continues to be an inspiration to me!  She had an amazing attitude towards life.  One of the last times I visited her in her home before she moved to a Care Home, she told me that she usually sat on her couch and either did the cross-word puzzle or watched T.V.  And when she felt the need for a change in scenery, she would use her walker to move over to sit

When I was in Halifax this fall, I rode many, many City busses - and saw many, many different bus drivers.  Sometimes the driver was rather grumpy - would hardly even look at you when you put your ticket in the little box.  However, others were quite amazing in the ways that they interacted with passengers.  It was funny how it could change your whole experience of the ride when the driver greeted you with enthusiam, and called out a "you're welcome" when passengers called out their "thank-you's" as they left the bus.  Often their greeting to me, or to

In some ways it feels like I will never be warm again - this deep freeze has gone on much too long!!  When it is this cold, it is even more difficult to get the energy to get out and about.  One of the prayers that we will be using this Sunday invites the Spirit of Life to "disturb us and wake us up".  The image that comes to mind is one that Art (my partner) told me about walking our dog when it was -34 outside.  She didn't shake her whole body, but she constantly shook her head

Now that the Christmas season is over - New Year's has come and gone - it is back to regular routine.  Here on the prairies, we are also back to living in the deep-freeze.  Yesterday it went up to -15 and it actually felt balmy - how sad is that?!?  On these cold January evenings it is hard to find the energy to get out and about.  It is much easier to just cozy up under a blanket and watch T.V.  Unless you are about 8 years old and your name is Brock!!  For the past 2 years, Brock and

January 1, 2017 is just around the corner - a brand new year!  Part of the blessing that we will be reading on Sunday morning includes words from a vow that pilgrims often make:  "to be faithful to the next step; to rely on more than the map; to heed the signposts of intuition and dream; and to follow the star that only you will recognize.."  It is not easy to contemplate new beginnings and the change that those beginnings will involve.  When I was on sabbatical this past fall, it was a huge learning curve for me,

Somehow my inner clock got stuck around lunchtime on November 1st - I have no idea how we have landed at suppertime on December 23rd!  However, here we are.  Today I got the lanterns ready for our Lantern holders (a new addition to our evening services that I think you are going to love!), and I practiced the story we are using to tell the familiar Christmas story, and I got all the taper candles ready to be handed out for our candle-light service - feels like things are in place and ready to go for our two services tomorrow

Just after high school, I moved to Edmonton and lived with my Aunt and Uncle and my three cousins for about 8 months.  I became a part of their family - the connection was very, very good.  Over the years, we have continued to connect with each other as often as we could.   About 6 years ago or so, they asked me if I would do their funerals when the time came.  It was a bit of a shock - my aunt was a long-time member of an Anglican church, and my uncle was French Canadian Catholic.  However, they

Funny thing happened at the office this week - we were shut down temporarily by church mice!  Literally.  Jayne and I are both quite terrified of mice.  I saw one in Faith Hall - so I did the only thing I knew how to do - screamed and jumped and ran out of the room!  A short time later Jayne heard what she thought was scratchy noises from her computer speakers - then saw the nose of mouse poking out from behind a file on her desk.  She did the only thing she could do - screamed and ran off

For the season of Advent, I have been reflecting on those things that we hold as "sacred".  Last week we thought about the gift of time, and how it is that we can recognize and celebrate the beauty of each moment as it comes along.  This week we are going to be reflecting on the sacred gift of people who are in our lives.  One of the ways to approach that idea is to think about Mary & Joseph from our Christmas story and how it is that they ushered love into the world.  So, who are the people who

Leaping right along towards Christmas...can't quite believe it!  This will be the first Sunday in Advent.  When people walk into our sanctuary, they will see the lovely decorations that a team of folk put up last night.  Every year it seems to be a few different people, which means that the Christmas look is always a little bit different from year to year.  However, there are most definitely a couple of constants.  One is the garlands with red bows which circle the whole of the sanctuary.  Keith Schneider is our man for that part - he has a system worked

I have been back in my office for 4 full days, and my head and heart are full to overflowing. Last night I met with 10 people to plan out our Advent special evenings, plus all of the worship services for Advent and the Christmas season. I was very touched by the enthusiasm of those who gathered with me last night. I would suggest an idea, and they were quick to volunteer to support it in whatever ways they could. We are about to have an AMAZING walk towards Christmas thanks to the energy and compassion of this small group
