Russell

I was commissioned as a Diaconal Minister in 1986 and settled in Lloydminster Alberta. Following that I worked in a variety of ministries in Toronto, including congregations; an outreach ministry doing community development with youth on the street, in the community, and in the church; and two years in the National office of The United Church of Canada as Youth Ministry Programme staff.  I have had over 20 years of experience working with children and youth in a variety of church and community settings.  I enjoy gardening, reading, and have been learning to play guitar.  Sunset is a very enjoyable and fulfilling ministry and I have really appreciated the welcome our family (my husband Brian, and two boys, Tyler and Cody) have received since arriving in 2000.  I celebrate that we became an Affirming Ministry in 2007 as we continue to intentionally work toward what it means to be welcoming of all regardless of ages, gender, racial/ethnic minority, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, ability, and economic circumstance.

I was commissioned to diaconal ministry in the United Church of Canada in 2001.  I have worked in several communities in Manitoba (Minnedosa, McCreary, Kelwood and Alonsa), and came to Sunset United in Regina in July of 2006.  A couple of the things that drew me to this community were the opportunity to worship “in the round” – the chairs are set up in a circle and I can stand in the centre and speak to the circle gathered round me – and the fact that we are an affirming ministry of the United Church of Canada (publicly stating our welcome of all, regardless of sexual orientation, race or economic status).  What drew me into ministry was my commitment to working towards a just society for all, and my passion for pastoral care – for reaching out to those who are wounded or who are in need of knowing that they have companions on the journey.

"Many years ago, when I was a teen, I sang in the Sunset United Church Choir. A few years after that I was married at Sunset.  I lived and raised my children in Greater Vancouver but on my husband's retirement, we moved back to Regina. I am very glad to be here to help my church as best I can." - Shirley Hill
