July 25, 2021

This past Friday were the opening ceremonies to the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo. These games were delayed due to the world pause but now we are taking the time to celebrate the power of sport.

I listened to the speeches during the ceremonies and one line made me stop. It was about updated the Olympic motto. It used to be "Faster, Higher, Stronger." It came from a ceremony before the modern olympiad in the 1880s and it was also in latin. During the speeches, the International Olympic Committee president, Thomas Bach, spoke about the power of sport that brings the world together to compete together and put aside the challenges. And so he called for the motto to be updated to "Faster, Higher, Stronger, Together."

It has been a year of difficulties for us and for sport. Most competitions were cancelled or massively modified. People could not participate in events that they loved. And, this year, there is another refugee team whose athletes were forced from their homes for many reasons but chose to compete for themselves and not for a country.

I think we should take a page from Thomas Bach and look at ways to use sports to bring people together as well as how the world is better when we work together.

The Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame has created a page with multiple activities for us to do during this Olympic time. Click here to find out more.

Remember that when we work together, we are better, and we create a better world for us all.

Peace and love,

Michelle
