Children & Youth
Children & Youth
We are a very child friendly church; children and youth are an important part of our church family. Children are welcome during all parts of Sunday worship. Each service has a Children’s Time when children are invited up to the Conversation Quilt to have a chat with Kathy and Michelle. Following Conversation Time, Michelle leads the way to Sunday school.
Sunday School – ages 3 to 12
We love to have fun at Sunday School! Singing, crafting, games and more! Our weekly activities are designed to connect with different learning styles. Activities range from crafts and games to baking and science experiments. We study one Bible story for 3 to 4 weeks and explore the story’s theme through a variety of activities (The Workshop Rotational Model).
Michelle, our youth coordinator, plans and leads Sunday school, assisted by volunteers from the congregation. Sunday school begins about 15 – 20 minutes into the Worship service. If you would like more information about Sunday school please contact Michelle This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Sunday school is offered most Sundays from September through May. When there is no Sunday school a “Whisper Table” is provided at the back of the sanctuary. It is stocked with a variety of crafting materials and is supervised by parents.
Youth Group – Grade 5 and up
The Youth Group’s goal is to have fun while supporting community initiatives. These young people lead busy lives but they try to meet once a month from September to May. Some annual events include a sleepover at church and a photo scavenger hunt. In addition, the Youth Group supports several organizations through fundraising and by volunteering their time. Organizations include: the Regina Food Bank, the Salvation Army, and Rainbow Youth. The Youth Group also participates in at least one Sunday service a year.
Michelle plans and leads the activities for the Youth Group with the support of parents, especially with transportation. There is always room for more! Contact Michelle for more information.
Nursery – Ages 0 to 3
Infants and toddlers are welcome during all parts of Sunday morning service, we are very child friendly. Two gliders are located at the back of the sanctuary for rocking or nursing. If needed, there is a small playroom available – please ask a greeter for directions. Toddlers who are interested in Sunday school are welcome to attend with a parent or guardian.
Getting to church is not always easy for families with young children, so we are always looking for ways to connect outside of Sunday morning. Families with young children have gathered on winter evenings and springtime afternoons, we have had coffee playdates and met for picnics at the nearby splash-pad. If you are a family with young children and would like to join these get-togethers, please contact Kathy This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
Children’s Clothing and Toy Consignment Sale
Sunset runs one of the longest running children’s clothing and toy consignments sales in Regina. There are two sales a year; one in the spring and one in the fall. The sale is a great way for families to outfit their children for a reasonable price, while it helps other families clear out things they have outgrown.
There are many ways to get involved in the sale. Contact us This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if you are interested in volunteering or consigning. Or like us on Facebook [link to page: Sunset United Children’s Clothing and Toy Consignment Sale] to get notices for upcoming sales. Sales are also on the church calendar, check under March/April or September.
Ministry Team
Minister:
Kathy Platt
I began working in a congregation in 1995, and was commissioned as a diaconal minister in the United Church of Canada in 2001 – drawn to the ministry of pastoral care (compassion); education (both for myself and others); and social justice (both local and global). I have been in ministry with 2 pastoral charges, including 4 congregations, in Manitoba – all of them rural – all of them, in their own way, enabling me to find my own voice and ever-deepening my call into ministry. I came to Sunset United in July of 2006. I preach from the heart – that is my starting place. I am a story-teller, and so preaching almost always involves stories either from my own life, or stories I have heard from other sources. I love to learn, and so I do my best to bring new ideas/concepts into our worship. My theory is that if I am excited about what I have learned, others may be excited to hear it as well! I know that a large part of what grounds me for daily living, is gathering with this community on a Sunday morning to sing, to pray, to laugh, and to give myself space to just be still for a little while. Coming here helps me re-orient myself towards a Spirit of Love – towards the promise that grief will not shatter us – towards the conviction that each one of us has the strength that we need to build a better world for ourselves and for our neighbours. I do my best to live true to the call issued by the prophet Micah: to seek justice, to love kindness, and to walk in gratitude with our God.
Youth and Young Adult Coordinator:
Michelle McConkey

Michelle has a contagious smile and a kind and generous nature that children gravitate to. Michelle loves to travel and wants to visit every province and territory in Canada - only one province and two territories to go! She is interested in games, crafts, and cooking as is evidenced in her teaching methods each week in Sunday School. She enjoys music, singing and movies, so the Frozen sing-a-long during a recent Youth Group sleepover was right up her alley! She also loves to volunteer, especially with the Roughriders during the regular season and, whenever possible, into the post-season; the 2013 Grey Cup was definitely a highlight! Michelle moved from Swift Current to Regina in 2005 to attend university. She joined the Sunset staff in September 2013.
Office Coordinator:
Jayne
Jayne is most likely the voice that you will first hear when you call the church - some people call just so they can hear her friendly "hello"! Although her main tasks are administrative - rentals, e-mails, phone-calls - she is a very compassionate presence in our office, and offers a wonderful ministry of hospitality to anyone who comes into our building. She was born and raised in Regina and has remained here for most of her life. She enjoys camping, hiking, and biking with her husband and two daughters.
Who We Are
Sunset United Church: Who we are
We’re an affirming ministry – that’s what this symbol means. When we say “all are welcome”; we mean ALL. As we affirm in in our Statement of Faith:
“… Diversity is truly a gift of God … We celebrate the richness that diversity brings to our church, even as it challenges us individually and collectively.”>
That is the short way of saying: We are committed to making you welcome – if you’re old or young, male or female, straight or gay or lesbian or bisexual or transgendered, married or single, rich or poor, disabled or not, in whatever combination of any of these characteristics you possess – and combined with whatever ethnicity or cultural membership or other background or experience you may bring with you. And all of your friends as well. That’s affirming.
Sunset is the center of a circle of community - a place for joyful worship, open minded spiritual exploration and growth, support for one another and outreach to the broader community and around the world. We welcome all to be a part of us - to find comfort, purpose, challenges and opportunities for service. Come help us be the church God calls us to be.
What to expect on a Sunday morning:
- We worship “in the round” – no matter where you sit (and since there is no “reserved” seating – every chair is a possibility!), you will always be able to see the face of someone else across the circle from you
- There is Sunday School most weeks for ages 3 and older and we are very baby and toddler friendly – there are rocking chairs at the back for anyone who needs space to rock; there is a play room for parents to take their children if need be; we often have children dancing in the space in the centre of our circle while the choir is singing!
- Our worship is thought-provoking, vibrant, and Spirit-filled. We are enriched both by the heart-felt sermons, and the beauty of our choir anthems. Although there is a general flow to the service each week, we are also very open to exploring alternative expressions of worship, such as drama, music, videos and humour.
